AI Engineer Intern
AI & Engineering - Remote - Internship - Ref SEM-2026-09
A first real engineering job in AI rather than a fetch-and-carry one. You would work on pieces of the systems we build for clients, with your own scoped tasks and someone senior reviewing everything you ship. We run internships because it is how we find people we want to keep, so it is written to be worth your time even if we do not hire you at the end.
This role is fully remote. There is no office and no hybrid arrangement: Semark works remotely everywhere. You can be based in any of the countries we hire from, and we work across time zones rather than expecting you to move.
What you will do
Build and test parts of retrieval and agent systems that go into real client work
Write evaluation cases that show whether a change made an answer better or only different
Work out why a model got something wrong, and write up what you found so the next person does not repeat it
Pair with a senior engineer every week, with your code reviewed properly rather than waved through
Present one thing you built to the whole team before you finish
What we are looking for
You can write Python without a tutorial open in another tab
You have built something with an LLM API, however small, and can say what surprised you about it
You can read code you did not write and work out what it does
You ask when you are stuck rather than disappearing for three days
A set number of hours a week that we agree before you start, and that you keep to
Nice to have
Genuinely optional. Nobody has all of these, and not having them has never stopped us hiring someone.
Coursework or a personal project involving retrieval, embeddings or fine-tuning
Git beyond commit and push
Some TypeScript
What you would work with
Pay
Pay is flexible and set against your location and experience. We tell you the range on the first call.
How hiring works
Send your CV through the form. The two short questions are optional, and we do read them.
If your experience fits the role, whoever leads that team gets in touch. We are a small team and only reach out when there is a fit, so no reply means it was not one this time.
A 30-minute call with whoever leads that team. No panel and no brain teasers.
A short practical exercise drawn from real work.
A decision after the exercise, either way. Anyone who puts that much in hears back from us.
