You set up your Google Business Profile, but when you search for your business, it does not appear. Or it shows up for your business name but not for the services you offer. This is one of the most common problems local business owners face, and it usually comes down to one of seven specific issues.
Short answer: The most common reasons are: your profile is not verified, you have a guideline violation causing a soft suspension, your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is inconsistent across the web, or your profile is too thin to compete for your target keywords. Most fixes take under an hour.
Fix 1: Complete Verification
Unverified profiles are the number one reason businesses do not appear. Google will not display an unverified listing in Search or Maps (Google's official help documentation). If you see a "Verify" prompt in your GBP dashboard, complete it. Verification methods include postcard, phone, email, or video, depending on your business type. Allow up to two weeks for the listing to appear after verification completes.
Fix 2: Check for a Soft Suspension
A soft suspension is different from a hard suspension. Your profile exists but is invisible, often because Google's Trust and Safety system flagged a quality issue. Many business owners do not realize they are soft-suspended, (ProfileSuspended.uk). Check your GBP dashboard for any warnings or status indicators. If you find one, follow the reinstatement process.
Fix 3: Fix NAP Inconsistencies
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. If your business name is "Smith Plumbing" on Google but "Smith Plumbing LLC" on Yelp and "Smith's Plumbing Services" on your website, Google gets confused. Even small inconsistencies like "St." versus "Street" can impact visibility (PinMeTo's research).
Audit your listings across Google, Yelp, Facebook, your website, and any industry directories. Make them identical. Tools like BrightLocal or Moz Local can automate this audit.
Fix 4: Match Your Business Name to Your Signage
Google's anti-spam AI cross-references your GBP business name against real-world Street View imagery of your physical signage (7 Rock Marketing). If your profile says "Elite Home Solutions" but your storefront sign says "Johnson Repairs," Google may flag or suppress your listing for deceptive content.
Fix 5: Complete Every Profile Section
Google's own published data states that complete profiles are twice as likely to be considered reputable by consumers. Fill out every field: business description, services, products, hours (including special hours), attributes, and photos. A sparse profile signals to Google that the business may not be active or legitimate.
Fix 6: Add Photos and Posts Regularly
BrightLocal's analysis of 45,000 Google Business Profile listings found that profiles with a rich photo library get measurably more calls and direction requests than sparse ones. Post updates at least twice a week. Google treats regular activity as a signal that your business is active and engaged.
Fix 7: Build Local Relevance
If your profile is verified, complete, and consistent but still not ranking for service keywords, the issue is likely relevance and prominence. Google uses three factors for local rankings: relevance (does your listing match the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher), and prominence (how well-known you are online).
Build prominence through reviews, local backlinks, and consistent content that mentions your service area and specialties.
What This Means for Your Business
Work through these fixes in order, starting with verification and ending with prominence building. Most visibility issues resolve with fixes one through four. If your profile is verified, consistent, and complete but still not showing up, the problem is almost always insufficient reviews and local authority, which takes sustained effort.
